During EXPOCAROZOS 2025 and before about 250 people, Chileprunes Executive Director Pedro Acuña presented a complete analysis of the evolution and perspectives of the Chilean prune industry highlighting the national productive scenario and the global tendencies of the sector.
During his exposition named “Where is the prune business headed?”, the executive explained that Chile establishes itself as a key player in the global production of prunes with a projected availability of 86,000 tons for the industry in 2025; this “confirms that Chile keeps a strategic role in the global supply, being number one in terms of exports”.
In the same way, he highlighted the growth of relevant markets such as China, Poland, Mexico and Germany that concentrate today a significant part of the Chilean exportations.
In this EXPOCAROZOS 2025 that took place on Thursday September the 4th at Hacienda San Francisco in Linderos, Pedro Acuña mentioned the more desirable genetic attributes for the future production like the double purpose of the fruit, early ripening, high conversion, good calibers and ease to remove the pit.
Regarding the tendencies of the industry, the executive director underlined clear tendencies for 2030 like reaching 16,000 planted hectares; today the cultivated area with European plum has reached 13,351 hectares mainly in the VI Region. In addition, it is necessary to advance in the use of more sustainable technology, to incorporate more rootstocks and to improve the drying process; the projection here is a balance of 30% drying tunnels and 70% sun drying.
“The emergence of new supply from China, the increase of fresh consumption and the need to make a difference in quality and sustainability are important challenges for the Chilean sector. But, at the same time, they are opportunities to strengthen our international leadership”, concluded the executive.
With this presentation, Chileprunes strengthens its commitment with competitiveness, innovation and sustainability in the prune industry; this is one of the fruit areas in which Chile has positioned itself as a global benchmark.
