The shipments were made to 76 countries being China more relevant than last year in relation to other countries in volumes as well as in values.
During the first nine months of 2024 the exports of Chilean prunes, a super food, reached 76 countries amounting 64.887 metric tons (MT), equivalent to US$ 183 millions.
Chile, the main prune exporter in the world, has among its five main markets China, Poland, Mexico, United States and United Kingdom among its five main markets regarding volume, but from the point of view of the return the United States is the second while Germany and Spain exceed The United Kingdom.
This information is given by Customs, an agency from the Chilean Government.
If there is something striking in the numbers it is the supremacy that China reaches as a destination for our export: more than a third of the volume goes to this country (23.590 MT), which corresponds to 27.2% (US$ 49,8 million) regarding amounts of money. Last year, until October, China had received the equivalent of 15,188 metric tons, almost three times the shipments to Germany and Mexico; today, on the other hand, it is four or five times more regarding metric tons.
Poland, second in volume, is known as a good consumer, but also a good collection center that later sends prunes to neighbor countries.
The main Latin-American destinations, after Mexico, are Colombia and Perú.
Because the cultivated area with European Prunes is about 13 thousand hectares, Chile is able to produce more than 100, 000 metric tons per year; an important percentage is used fresh, sold in China according to Chileprunes, the Trade Association of Processers and Exporters of Chilean Prunes that gathers more than 70% of the prune exports.
